Jaclyn & Chad Wedding- Wedding in a Week Winners!

Last Friday we shot Jaclyn and Chad’s wedding as a part of the Wedding in a Week giveaway. If you haven’t heard about it, we teamed up with a lot of other great people to give one couple a free wedding. The couple submitted their story to The Houston Wedding Showcase, a great bridal show we participate in, who put the event together and brought all the other sponsors in on the action. We obviously did the wedding photography, and there were a couple dozen other vendors who donated their services to make Jaclyn and Chad’s day perfect. Hotel Sorella donated their facilities and catered the reception, giving the wedding a super modern look. Ashley Fuentes at Event Solutions did a wonderful job of organizing the event and coordinating all of the vendors to bring the whole day off without a hitch. We enjoyed working with the videographers, KS Video, very much, and we can’t wait to see their video. There were scads of other vendors, including; Men’s Warehouse, Weddings in Bloom, Bistro Alex, Lasting Images photo booths, King’s Crossing Travel, Memories of Today stationary, Wedding Wire, Mix 96.5, Houston’s Channel 55, JM Productions DJs, Sweet Delights wedding cakes, The Princess Bridal dresses, Monarch Limousines, Celebrity China & Crystal, Weddings Performed wedding officiant, Scentsy candles, Water 2 Wine, and Bridal Dolls by Simone.  Houston’s Channel 55 will be airing a short segment about the Wedding in Week event on Thursday March 11 between 6AM and 9AM during the Daily Buzz.

We got started very early (5:30AM!), so everyone was dragging a little bit at first, but after a few cups of coffee everyone got into the swing of things. We truly enjoyed being a part of Jaclyn and Chad’s special day. They and their sweet family’s were a pleasure to be around. These guys have been together a long time, and it was plain to see that their family and friends were just as excited about their wedding as the happy couple.

Hair and Makeup started promptly at 5:30AM, so early, in fact, that everyone was a little loopy, as you can see!

Tiffany and Montague’s Wedding

Last Weekend we had a blast shooting Tiffany and Mo’s wedding at the Sweetwater Country Club. Unfortunately, the sun hid behind the clouds all day, but at least we didn’t get any rain or freezing temperatures! Tiff and Mo didn’t let a few clouds put a damper on their wedding. I don’t know if anything could have put a damper on the party for these two; they seem to have fun no matter what. You may remember how much fun their Engagement photography shoot at Discovery Green was last summer. We enjoyed working Tiffany and Mo and getting to know their friends and family. We’re so happy that Tiff and Mo chose us to be their wedding photographers!

Stacey & Jeff

Stacey and Jeff ’s wedding was a few weeks ago at Messiah Lutheran Church, a church where her grandparents were charter members and her parents met each other in children’s Sunday school.  I love hearing the stories from parents and grandparents about the history their family has and the traditions they are carrying on!  This is such an endearing family that made us feel like we were a part of them and that makes our job feel so special!  Their reception was at the Westlake Club and it was one good party!  I often forget to post bridal portraits so I am including a couple of Stacey’s from Hotel Granduca; a gorgeous location for a shoot!

a downtown shoot . . . downtown katy that is

we had a great time with these guys and their pups!  dogs are always an interesting variable to add to a shoot but these 2 were very well behaved and even posed for their pictures.  we started the shoot at on old train car in downtown katy and then made our way down the tracks to explore and the great colors and textures that this setting had to offer.  like most of our couples josh and jess showed up saying they weren’t “good at having their pictures taken,” but they loosened up quickly and really let their personalities show.  we are looking forward to shooting their wedding in a couple of months in beeville!

SBS Alumni Wedding . . .

I don’t know how many of you know this, but Mike and I went to high school together at Second Baptist here in Houston.  We didn’t know each other, if you can believe that.  We met in Nashville but we love having a common history and we love being back in Houston and having the opportunity to work with other SBS alums!  Stephanie & Ronnie were so fun to work with.  They are young and they know how to celebrate!  Between the cake in the face and the sparklers at their exit I don’t think the dance floor stopped!  Stephanie & Ronnie were married at Second Baptist Church and the reception was at the Racquet Club.  Congratulations guys!  We hope you have as much fun in your marriage as you did at your wedding!

Dabbling in HDR

You know you love what you do for a living when it’s also what you choose to do on your day off! This is what I did with my day off the other day.

So, I’ve seen a lot of buzz on Twitter lately about high dynamic range (HDR) photography from some of the photographers I follow, namely @BorrowLenses, borrowlenses.com@ScottBourne, photofocus.com; and of course @TreyRatcliff, stuckincustoms.com, who appears to be the Zen master of HDR. I’m hoping to buy Trey’s new book, A World in HDR because his work is so phenomenal. Anyway, After seeing a lot of great work from these awesome photographers, I decided to give HDR a shot. I was very intrigued from the first time I heard about HDR as it potentially solves a common photography problem; the dynamic range of the scene exceeding the dynamic range of the camera, or film.

The idea behind HDR photography is to combine multiple exposures from the the same scene to create greater dynamic range than your camera can capture. Digital cameras and film alike both have a finite dynamic range, or total range between black and white. Inconveniently, the dynamic range of all cameras is narrower than that of the human eye, making it impossible to capture the scene as you see it with one picture. You typically have to choose between shooting the scene bright enough to get detail in your shadows, which will overexpose your highlights, or shooting the scene dark enough to get detail in your highlights, thereby sacrificing detail in the shadows. HDR enables you to achieve detail in both the shadows and the highlights by shooting the same scene at multiple exposure values and then merging them into one image using specialized software.

You might recognize this fountain. Its at the heart of Tranquility Park in downtown Houston.

Here is the finished product, what do you think?

IMG_9272_3_4_hdr_edit_blog

Here are the original images that the HDR is composed of. The first image is the baseline image, with the the most balanced exposure that I could find. You can see that the sky and the water are still blown out, and there’s not very much detail in the shadows. I shot it using our Canon EOS 5D mkII camera and our Canon EF 24-70 F/2,8L lens. Setting were ISO 100, F8, 1/60, and I was zoomed to 50mm. I was at the park about 1PM, which is some of the harshest light all day. I had some light clouds diffusing the sun a bit, though.

IMG_9272_blog

This is the second image I shot. I used the auto exposure bracketing feature on my 5D2 to speed the shutter by a full stop from the first picture, thereby darkening the picture by one stop. You can see that there is very little detail in the shadows, but there is more detail in the brighter areas of the image, like the sky and water. All setting the same except shutter 1/125.

IMG_9273_blog

For the third image, I used the auto exposure bracketing feature to slow the shutter by a full stop to overexpose the image one stop over the first image. Notice that the sky and much of the water is completely blown out, but there is lots of detail in the shadows. All settings the same except the shutter moves to 1/30.

IMG_9274_blogAfter importing the images onto my computer, I used Photomatix Pro to merge them into the HDR, and then did some other minor edits in Photoshop. I’ve only just begun to work withPhotomatix Pro, so I’m still coming to understand the nuances of the tone mapping controls which determine the final look of the image, but I found the controls to be very intuitive and the entire process to be very easy to navigate. I didn’t have to read any tutorials at all to navigate the software and walk through the HDR process.

One other thing I should probably mention is that you’ll want your tripod with you if you decide to dabble in HDR. Since you’re merging the images together its critical that they be completely identical except for the difference in exposure, and its all but impossible to pull that off handheld.

Laura & Kyle

It was cold last week for Laura and Kyle’s wedding! Everyone had a great time celebrating their wedding in spite of the cold, but they didn’t go outside much!  The wedding ceremony was at the  beautiful St. Martin’s Episcopal Church, and then the reception was around the corner at the Bayou Club.  We truly enjoyed being Laura & Kyle’s wedding photographers. It was so much fun to get to know their families and see how much they enjoyed themselves and loved each other. These are people who love to laugh!

mindi & greg

mindi and greg were married last weekend at trinity episcopal and had so much fun as their wedding photographers!  this bunch had fun from start to finish!  mindi & greg decided to see each other before the wedding and this is a trend that we are BIG fans of.  mike and i saw each other before our wedding and i always tell my brides how glad i was that we did that.  it was a really special time where i walked down the isle just to him and got my big ugly cry out of the way before everyone was watching me!  then all my nerves were settled and we were able to spend that much more of the day together, not to mention, get all of the group shots done before the wedding even started!  it was great!  after mindi and greg had a few minutes alone together, we started their family and wedding party shots.  it was a nasty day outside but fortunately the church was gorgeous so we made the best of it. congratulations mindi & greg!  we hope you have as much fun in your marriage as you did at your wedding!  it was a blast!

Kathy and Scott

So, evidently Houston does get some winter after all! We’d already had to reschedule Kathy and Scott’s engagement photography shoot once due to winter weather, and after the snow last weekend we were afraid we would have to reschedule again. Saturday was sunny, but a little cold and windy. We decided we needed to make the most of the sunshine we had, in spite of the cold (and in spite of missing the Alabama-Florida game!) We met downtown at tranquility park to shoot in the shadow of the downtown Houston skyline. After shooting in several different spots in the park, we hopped in Scott’s car to cruise around downtown looking for other cool spots. This was a good plan in that it enabled us to find a lot of diverse spots to shoot, and also in that it enabled us to warm up after each location! We ended up at the bar at Sambuca, where we noticed their awesome red velour curtain onstage. We had to try a few shots in front of it too. They might be some of my favorite shots all year! Anyway, we had a lot of fun bumming around Houston searching out cool spots to shoot, even if Scott missed most of the game.

Some Proud Aggies

Catherine called us a few days before the wedding to explain that her father had been hospitalized, and would be unable to make it to the wedding. They decided to have a pre-wedding ceremony at the hospital’s chapel so her dad could be a part of their marriage, and asked if we could come a little early and shoot the ceremony at the chapel before we started the pre-ceremony photography. We said, “of course,” and so we met them at the Bowles Chapel at Memorial Southwest for the family-only ceremony. I’m so glad we were able to be there for Catherine and Steven at that ceremony. It was a privilege to document such and intimate family moment. We were also pleasantly surprised by how beautiful and ornate the chapel is. Afterwards, we headed over to Pilgrim Lutheran Church for the happy couple to get married again. After the ceremony, Catherine and Steven rode to the reception in a 1948 open cab fire truck driven by her dad’s partner from their firehouse; an awesome and unique touch! The reception was Chateau Crystale and it was quite beautiful. When they played the Aggie war hymn at the reception it seemed like the entire room got to its feet, locked arms, and sang at the top of their lungs, including Deb, who stopped taking pictures to sing along, much to my surprise. Unfortunately, I didn’t get any pictures of Deb’s little Aggie reverie. Deb explained to me later that she’s, “an Aggie first and a photographer second.”  Between you and me, I think she’s crazy first, an Aggie second, and a photographer third!

Anyway, Catherine and Steven and their family and friends had a blast celebrating their marriage, and I think we had just as much fun doing their wedding photography!
